If I Picked the Oscars....by Big Daddy at the Movies

Now that I have seen all 5 of the Best Picture nominations, I feel I am just as qualified to pick the Oscars as those
that do the actual selections.  Also, now that the actual votes are in, I don't have to worry about influencing the
Academy with any depth of knowledge on the subject.  Lets start at the bottom and work our way up to the top.

Best Original Screenplay
The Aviator has my vote.  If you can squeeze all that information into 2 1/2 hours and have it make sense, that's
a good screenplay.

Best Supporting Actress
When you hear all that Cate Blanchett went through to play Katharine Hepburn, you only have one choice, an
incredible performance.

Best Supporting Actor
A very hard pick.  I saw them all and without going on and on, in a two-way race between Jamie and Morgan, I
have to put my two bits on "the Baby."

Best Actress
No contest.  A knock-out for Hillary Swank; and, she didn't even have to take her clothes off and get "freaky" with
someone.

Best Actor
No clear winner here.  All 5 should split this equally.  But, seeing that that will never happen, the momentum seems
to be leaning towards Jamie, and I will have to agree.

Best Director
Clint, good movie; but not hard to make.  Typical Clint movie.  Taylor Hackford for "Ray,"  was a good movie,
and a labor of love, but not quite there.  Buy your E-Ticket for the Aviator, Marty finally gets the Gold!

Best Picture
Once again split is 5 ways.  But, isn't this what makes going to the movies worth while.  You need to know that
when you throw down your $9.00 it is going to be an experience to savor and not regret.  Call my Bookie and
bet the ranch on "Million Dollar Baby."

The other award categories.....but who cares.  Song doesn't mean what it used to since Eminem beat Paul Simon.
Screenplay from another source...grunt work.  Costumes, another one where everyone should win...and the list
goes on and on.  And, who really cares about Best Documentary and Best Foreign Film; really is that why we
suffer through 3 hours of bad TV?  We all want the prize at the bottom of the box.  So, if you are reading this
Academy, tighten up the show, lets get on with it.  I got to get up for work in the morning.

a Review by Tony Hernandez, aka CHICO

On Monday January 31, 2005, the Tenny Street Roadhouse in Dearborn Michigan hosted Lady Sunshine and the X Band.  The Ann Arbor based group delivers rocking blues, R&B and soul flavored funk.  The Lady's Band, in turn hosted the "open mic" night at the popular Roadhouse.  The X Band was there fresh from its very well deserved first place finish in the annual Detroit Blues Society Challenge held throughout the Detroit area.  The Travellin' Blues Band won the individual/duo category, while the Lady's Group won the band category.  Together, they will continue on to Memphis Tennessee to represent Detroit and perform in the International Blues Competition.

Having enjoyed Lady Sunshine's Band over the last ten years and seeing them evolve to its very tight, soul-grabbing musical persona, it's no wonder they were chosen to represent the metro Detroit area in Memphis.  Lady Sunshine who has never told me her given name after all these years, has that intangible gift and power to reach out to each person in the audience.  It seems, in particular, to ladies, as she praises, wails, laments, curses, ridicules and or testifies in reference to the lover/husband/ex in any given song.  For example, in "My Husband Don't Love Me," the Lady mocks in reference to her mate's philanderings,"...the more you do it the better I sing!"  The girls just plain love it and the bond is unbreakable - they scream in united vengeance!  This part of her show sometimes makes me nervous.

In reality, the Lady spends a good part of her show speaking directly to her audience and getting them to participate in songs.  But moreover, in feeling, she is that rare performer who makes one feel a truly active part of the show...she touches you.  And it's no wonder, since the Lady will tell everyone that what she sings and writes about is her life.

At this show, we were promised that regardless of the Memphis Challenge outcome, there would be a "huge party" upon the Band's return because they were so proud and grateful to have been selected.

I won't miss that Party!!
